Kaminey
Saw Kaminey last night!! Wow! This is indeed Pulp Fiction served with bhel puri. Kill Bill served with Masala Muri. Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels set in the mean streets of Mumbai. Tarantino gone native.
There are numerous references and cheeky tributes to the masters.
Take the "Bada Pau" scene with Bhope(Amol Gupte) a la the "Big Kahuna Burger" breakfast scene in Pulp Fiction. The Majher Jhole swigging AK47 toting deranged Bengali brothers were awesome as well!
One of the main story threads involves fixing a sporting event just like the boxing match that Marcello Marcellas tries to fix in Pulp Fiction
The music is really fantastic but there are echos of Tarantino in there as well.
But make no mistake this could be Bollywood meets Hollywood but is as original as can be.
It is an edge of the seat thriller with fast paced action, amazing handheld cinematography and awesome depth in characterisation of even minor roles. The story is a completely new take on the archetypal identical twin yarn that has been standard Bollywood staple for years. Charlie and Guddu are identical siblings (both played by Shahid Kapur in the role of his lifetime)brought up by a poor but doting father-a modest railway signal man who migrates to Bombay(Mumbai) from Barabanki. But they are as different as wheat from chaff, whisky from soda. Guddu is a sidha sadha mousy common person, who works for an NGO and wants to eke out a honest living (Iman ki Kamai) where as Charlie is his alter ego, who is always looking for a "shorter Shortcut" to success, who balks at nothing be it gambling, or fixing horse races or even dealing with drugs. However in a delightful comic touch (the likes of which abounds in this movie) they both suffer from speech impairments. Guddu is a big stammerer while Charlie pronounces "s" as "f"
Over a dizzy head spinning 24 hour period Guddu is proposed by his feisty Marathi girl friend (the amazing Priyanka Chopra) who unbeknownst to him is the sister of the Marathi Manoos gangster politican Bhope ( Amol Gupte- The "Tare Zamin par" scripwriter in an amazing debut) while charlie accidentally steals a cache of cocaine from a couple of corrupt cops who were about to deliver them to a wily drug mafia boss Tashi (Tenzing Nima). Bhope flies into a rage on learning that his sister is about to wreck his political career by marrying a migrant from UP and sets his gang of hooligans to search and bring back his sister.
Then there is the delightfully deranged bong brothers who run a shady horse racing fixing business. There is an amazing performance from Chandan Roy sanyal who plays the drug addled youngest brother Mikhail. The concept of majher jhole swigging bet fixing AK47(INSAS) toting bong brothers was too funny and original.
Anyway the movie hurtles towards a mind numbing nail biting climax where all the disparate threads come together is gory yet comic finale. As the TOI reviewer said "Kaminey is like Vodka and Martini, it will leave you both shaken and stirred"
Step aside Tarantino and Guy Ritchie. Make room for Vishal Bharadwaj! Dhan Te Nan.

Not 'p' to 'f' pronunciation, but 's' to 'f'. And not Priyanka Sharma, but Priyanka Chopra.
ReplyDeleteBut did you like it so much? Frankly, I had a higher expectation from the movie. I'd rate a movie called 'Gulal' much higher than this, though it is not a standard pulp fiction. Watch it if you can - it's a Anurag Kashyap movie.
thanks for the corrections. My wife pointed them out as well
