Kaminey

Saw Kaminey last night!! Wow! This is indeed Pulp Fiction served with bhel puri. Kill Bill served with Masala Muri. Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels set in the mean streets of Mumbai. Tarantino gone native. There are numerous references and cheeky tributes to the masters. Take the "Bada Pau" scene with Bhope(Amol Gupte) a la the "Big Kahuna Burger" breakfast scene in Pulp Fiction. The Majher Jhole swigging AK47 toting deranged Bengali brothers were awesome as well! One of the main story threads involves fixing a sporting event just like the boxing match that Marcello Marcellas tries to fix in Pulp Fiction The music is really fantastic but there are echos of Tarantino in there as well. But make no mistake this could be Bollywood meets Hollywood but is as original as can be. Came across this piece of sculpture while roving around Bedford Square. Its apparently inspired by the Jordnanian city of Petra (or the ruins of it). The sculpture consists of 28 layers of plywood.

Ram mohun's blue plaque

I was intrigued by the blue plaque in Bedford Square saying "Ram Mohun Ray lived here". We all know his contribution to reforming age old practices, particularly the outlawing of Sati/Suttee. He also started a religious reform movement called "Brahmo Samaj" in Bengal. Many luminaries of the Bengal renaissance like the Tagores and the Rays belonged to that movement. What is perhaps less well known is that Ram Mohun was actually the first recorded Indian(AFAIK) to have set foot on blighty. He fought against age old taboos about "Kalaa Pani" to actually set sail on a ship to England. He came to England in 1831 to ensure the implementation of the ban of Sati. He also addressed the privy council. He died at Stapleton then a village to the north east of Bristol (now a suburb) on the 27th September 1833 of meningitis and is buried in Arnos Vale Cemetery in southern Bristol.
